Roulette Background

Roulette is a classic casino game found both in live casinos and online casinos.

The game has been around in Europe since the 18th century, and remains very popular both there and in the United States.  Roulette players in casinos tend to prefer a more relaxed gambling game compared to craps, for example. The American game’s house edge is nearly double that of the European roulette house edge, which could account for why it is much more popular in Europe than the States.

Roulette is thought to have been invented 1796 Paris and was in very nearly the same form used today, with the exception that in Europe the 00 is no longer used (but is in America).

While roulette is the only real casino game played with a ball and slotted wheel, there were two other games that predate it: Biribi, an Italian game, and Roly-Poly, an English game. Biribi used colors but no numbers, and Roly-Poly only had black and white slots; both different from the Black and Red, numbered game of today.
