New Plans for Atlantic City focus on Tourism

Crunch Casino Staff - 14 Nov 2010

Legislation in the works could lead to an Atlantic City tourism district.

If New Jersey Democrats get their way soon legislation will pass that would give the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority broader powers to be used to create and run a tourism district in Atlantic City.

On Monday a state Senate committee will hear the proposal, currently contained in draft legislation. If passed the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority would be responsible for marketing the casino resort.

While at first look the proposal seems much like a plan proposed by Republican Gov. Chris Christie there are some important differences. Where Christie wants to create a new state authority in order to market the resort in partnership with the casino companies, the Democratic plan involves broadening powers of the existing CRDA.

Also the Democrats' bill would renew the purse subsidy for the state horse racing industry, while Christie wants to eliminate the subsidy all together.
