New Legislature will control Oxford Casino Future

Crunch Casino Staff - 15 Nov 2010

Thanks to a pending recount the once-certain future of an Oxford County casino is in doubt.

Right now there is only one place to go to play slots in Maine, and that is Bangor’s Hollywood Slots. A pending recount could keep it that way despite the fact that on November 2nd voters agreed that a new, full-service casino should be built in Oxford County.

After the recount was called for-- and petitions with the request number of signatures were submitted-- representatives of Black Bear Entertainment began to protest. Black Bear is the group of Maine investors behind the casino, and they feel the Legislature should approve the law the voters want..

The recount was called by the opponents of Question 1, led by Hollywood Slots. They hope to persuade lawmakers to change the law, specifically adding provisions that would allow Hollywood Slots wants to add table games and thus remain competitive with the incoming casino.
