Casino Plans Voted Down

Tuesday’s voting in the US state of Oregon ended plans for a Non-Tribal casino near Portland.

Tribal casinos in Oregon were thrilled to learn the results of Tuesday’s voting session when a casino measure was rejected as Oregon voters turned down a proposal to build a casino near Portland.

Had the casino measure passed it would have led to a casino outside Portland which would have been in direct competition with tribal casinos located farther away from the state's largest metro.

A Canadian investment firm had spent $2 million on an advertising and lobbying campaign hoping to convince voters to create an exception to Oregon's ban on private casinos.

There were many opponents to the plan, many saying the casino would send money out of the state and that it would harm the state lottery and take business from tribal casinos, which rely on gambling income to pay for government services.

Justin Martin, a spokesman for the Oregon Tribal Gaming Alliance, said "We're excited Oregon voters sent a resounding message to foreign corporations and out-of-state investors that we don't need a private gambling monopoly here in Oregon.”
